Service: Micropiles Used to Retrofit Bridge to Support Heavy Load Transport

Subsurface Constructors designed and installed 30 micropiles as part of a county bridge retrofit near Lenzburg, IL. The purpose of the retrofit was to allow the bridge to sustain much heavier loads that would be applied during special heavy load transports to the nearby Prairie State Energy Campus construction site.

The micropiles ranged in capacity from 35 tons to 60 tons with required rock embedments of 2 ft. and 7 ft., respectively. Subsurface used a low-overhead Klemm rig in restricted access and extremely sloppy conditions to install the pile. Load tests were successfully performed on each pile type.
