Ground improvement with vibro stone columns in coastal Texas

Subsurface Constructors recently completed two ground improvement projects in Texas, a first for the ground improvement and deep foundation contractor. This project involved the design and installation of vibro stone columns for a rehabilitation hospital in downtown Corpus Christi, about two blocks from the waterfront.

The design consisted of 265 stone columns installed to an average depth of 15 feet to treat the interbedded layers of soft clay, loose sand and loose silt. A dry bottom feed installation technique was used to install the stone columns. The columns were designed to provide a uniform bearing pressure of 5,000 pounds per square foot (psf) under the structural pad and continuous footings.
